How to Choose a Vase for Your Flower Bouquet

A clear glass vase keeps the stems visible and lets the bouquet’s soft colours take centre stage.

The right vase helps a bouquet feel at home. It supports the stems, gives the flowers room to open, and makes the arrangement comfortable to display where you will enjoy it most.

If you are wondering how to choose a vase for your flower bouquet, start with three things: the width of the opening, the height of the vase, and the space where the flowers will sit. Colour can come after fit.

Whether you have received flowers in Calgary or are preparing a gift for someone elsewhere in Canada, these practical details can make choosing a vase easier.

How to Choose a Vase: Start with the Opening

Before choosing a vase for its colour or shape, look at the opening.

An opening that is too narrow can crowd the stems and make it difficult to position the bouquet comfortably. One that is too wide may allow the stems to spread farther apart than you want, changing the shape of the design.

Look for an opening that holds the stems together gently while leaving enough room to place and remove the bouquet without forcing it.

If you have several vases at home, compare their openings before trimming any stems. A different container may be all you need.

Check the Height Before Cutting the Stems

A tall vase can hide much of a short bouquet, while a very low container may offer too little support for long stems.

Hold the bouquet beside the vase first. Look at where the flowers and foliage would sit in relation to the rim. The blooms should have room above the opening, and the vase should feel stable with the bouquet in place.

Avoid making a large cut immediately. If trimming is needed, work gradually and check the fit as you go. You can shorten a stem further, but you cannot restore its length.

Follow any preparation instructions supplied with your flowers.

Choose for the Place Where You Will Display It

A vase that works beautifully on an entryway console may be less comfortable on a small dining table.

For a dining table, consider whether people can see one another across the flowers. On a desk, leave room for a keyboard, a glass of water, and everyday movement. On a side table, check that the base sits securely without being close to the edge.

Before filling the vase, place it in the intended spot. This makes it easier to judge the overall footprint and whether the arrangement will feel balanced in the room.

Let the Vase Colour Support the Flowers

Clear glass keeps the stems visible and lets the flowers provide most of the colour. An opaque vase creates a different finish and can help connect the arrangement with the room.

For a soft pink bouquet, you might choose clear glass, white, or a muted blush tone. White and green flowers can sit beautifully in a neutral container or stand out against a deeper shade.

These are styling choices rather than rules. A favourite vase with personal meaning can be a lovely part of the display.

Sending Flowers to Someone Who May Not Own a Vase?

When ordering a gift, think about what the recipient will need after it arrives.

Someone who regularly enjoys flowers may already have a suitable container. A person moving into a new home or receiving flowers away from home may appreciate having one included.

Review the selected product’s description and vase options carefully. A vase shown in a photograph is not confirmation that every purchase option includes it. Likewise, including a vase does not always mean the flowers arrive already arranged inside it.

Keep the Vase Easy to Care For

Choose a container you can clean properly and refill comfortably. Once the flowers are displayed, continue checking the water and following the care instructions provided.
